The npm tool itself doesn't have a way of applying that automatically - you need to install an extra tool, npm-check-updates: npm install -g npm-check-updates OK, so there's a major version upgrade available. If you prefer to use plain vanilla npm, you can run the built in npm update command from the directory where your package.json file lives. Npm outdated shows if there are any releases that go beyond my pinned packages. The ^ syntax here pins to a major version - running npm update will update the package-lock.json file to point to the highest 2.x version of the package but won't increase the major version to 3.x.
